Time To Not Get Things Done.

Monday, November 29th, 2004

It’s back to the grind for Andrew. Thanksgiving break went really well; I got to spend time with a lot of people I haven’t seen in a while. I went with Wes to Hamilton to see ACTA on Saturday, and it turned out to be easily the worst show I’ve ever been to. I’d forgotten how terrible most hardcore shows are, and especially ones where some genius has put nine bands on the bill. It was worth it though, because I got to see all the guys from the band plus a bunch of other friendly faces. Aside from that, not a lot has happened. It’s very cold and rainy here, making it require quite a bit of courage and motivation to get out of bed and go to class. Luckily, being the valiant and studious young man that I am, I’ve been able to triumph over the dreariness.

Home Again Home Again

“Dante, if you had a son would you ever name him Squanto?”
“What? ……. I’m not sure. Why would I name my kid Squanto?”
“Nobody is named Squanto anymore, it just seems like more people should have that name.”
“You seem to think he was a pretty cool dude, you should name your kid Squanto.”
“Squanto Kazuma, hm… I don’t know…”
“He’d have a pretty tough name. I think your son would pretty much have to be some kind of warrior.”
“Yeah, I guess. I don’t think the original Squanto was all that tough though.”
“Maybe, maybe not.”
“He should have changed his name to Percy. Squanto is way too tough a name for a friendly go-between Indian.”
“I guess, how do you know he wasn’t tough?”
“A tough Indian wouldn’t have showed the pilgrims how to farm and stuff. He would have attacked them and beat them down.”
“Interesting.”
“So, how about that fight at the Pacers game?”

Wiggity Wack

I just passed the 4,000 mark on site hits (hopefully only 2,000 of them are me) and Jabba the Hutt has officially won as the most popular Star Wars character with a whopping 6 votes. C3PO or R2D2 came in close second with 5 votes. Though, I hear that this poll may have been slightly skewed by a certain person of a specifically close relation to me. Just a friendly encouragement against messing up my glorious polls in the future: If you are caught, a legion of furious attack-robots will be sent against you and your household. They will break your doors down and track mud all over your carpet and wood floors. They may even go so far as to grind their feet into your couch. Let’s just hope it doesn’t come to that.

George Orwell’s “The Matrix”

Friday, November 19th, 2004

So there was this guy who apparently sat down one day and read 1984 and Brave New World at the same time while watching the Matrix, then said, “Hey, I’m going to make a movie!” And thus Equilibrium was born. It was an interesting movie with some cool effects and a fairly intelligent plot, though in the behind the scenes special features and stuff everyone failed to mention that there are two well known books that deal with the same thing and a movie whose action sequences look vaguely similar (and by vaguely similar I mean completely identical). The people who made this movie seem to be under the impression that they had a completely original idea. Or maybe it’s just not cool to site your influences. Who knows. I’m not really trying to bash the movie so much, I just found it sort of humorous.

Slow Times.

What do Nada Surf, Family Matters, Rockapella, The Presidents of the United States of America, Mr. Rogers, and Coldplay have in common? My Generation Night. Up until about 8:30 last night I thought My Generation Night was going to be a talent show type thing where Taylor bands played bad cover songs, which would have been okay with me, since I had several friends who were going to be performing and it would have been sort of fun anyway. But, as I’ve found is the case with most things at Taylor, people love to take things to the extreme. Not only were there several bands, but they and skits between each performance. People really get into this kind of stuff here. As the name implies, the night was a sort of tribute to “my generation”, aka the 90’s (and early 2000’s).
