Cincinanti Weekend (Part 2)

Tuesday, September 27th, 2005

After the service JK and I dropped by PF Chang’s for some lunch. I’ve never been to one of these places before, so I didn’t really know what to expect other than “Asian”. It turned out to be really good though, and if you chose what you got carefully, it wasn’t all that expensive either. There was a Hispanic waitress there that JK sort of knew, though she didn’t speak much English and he didn’t know Spanish. I had mentioned the previous night that I’d taken three years of Spanish in high school, and so when she came over he pointed at me and said, “He speaks Spanish!” She smiled really wide and said something really long and complicated in Spanish, and I just stared dumbly. Then I thought really hard and said, “Se muy…” and then held my index finger and thumb very close together to indicate a microscopic quantity. She laughed and I smiled nervously and shrugged. We did manage to have some interesting and humorously pathetic Spanglish conversations though, and afterwards I made a resolution to be sure to pay more attention in Spanish class if ever I am sucked back in time through a bizarre time and space anomaly. Anyway, as far as restaurants go, PF Chang’s gets a thumbs up from andrewwelsh.net.

Cincinnati Weekend (Part 1)

Monday, September 26th, 2005

So far Cincinnati’s been treating me pretty well. I’ve been riding my bike all over the place to get groceries, find and visit the local comic shops, and, um… get more groceries. When you have no idea what and how much you need of stuff, having a Kroger two minutes away is extremely helpful. I would say that they’re probably getting sick of me there, but the place is always teeming with people and I doubt daily customers are all that rare. Though, being one of the two or three white guys in the place does make me stand out a little I suppose.

Today is Friday. Instead of Calculus I have a math lab on Friday mornings. When I woke up this morning and biked to campus I thought I knew where the building the lab is in is located. Unfortunately, every so often I’m not quite as smart as I think I am. (REMEMBER!!: THIS IS VERY RARE!!!) It rained very early this morning and so it was less hot than usual, but oppressively humid. My ride/walk to campus involves an enormous section of uphill, so I was already pretty hot and sweaty when I got to UC. Then matters were only compounded when I had to ride all over the place trying to find the right building. Not only was I sweating because it was so humid I was practically swimming in the air, but I was also super stressed about not finding the class and becoming increasingly late. I finally located the building, climbed a few flights of stairs, and then busted into the classroom, forehead and fingertips dripping. Everybody just stared at me for a few seconds, and then went busily back to typing. I sat next to a guy in the front of the class where all the open seats were, and I could tell that he was less than pleased about having to sit next to the classic late, nervous, sweaty kid. He helped me figure out what was going on anyway, and for that I am in his debt. If you’re out there somewhere Nice Guy, just know that Andrewwelsh.net gives you its full support as well as admirable recognition honor awards and stuff!

Classtime Passtime

Wednesday, September 21st, 2005

Calculus 3 and Economics are over with for the day. My calc professor was this nice old man who seemed absolutely terrified of us students. He was out of breath and hardly able to speak the entire class period. I didn’t see anything particularly horrifying about us, other than we were all white or Indian, and I’m pretty sure that isn’t incredibly scary. My econ class, on the other hand, is enormous. Like thousands and thousands of students. Well, almost. It looks like it’ll be cool though. The prof is… well, interesting. I like him so far though. He was telling us how willing he is to help us learn and said, “Now, I’ve heard that at some other colleges here the professors have told students not to call them. Well, rest assured you can contact me any time during my office hours that you need, and leave my voice mails whenever you want. I’m a teacher! Hmph!” At this point the room was absolutely silent and everybody was just sort of staring at him.
