My friend Paul from work has been trying to get me to move into the house that he’s renting with a few other guys. Apparently I would be replacing a guy who has suddenly decided to move to Tennessee to live with an older woman and her kid. Legend has it that they met via a popular online role-playing game and it’s been wacky internet-love ever since. I suppose slaying dragons and participating in epic medieval warfare is somewhat more exciting than most traditional dates.

A Bit of Steering

On Friday I went to see Snakes on a Plane and pretty much had my mind obliterated. Then on Saturday after work I went out eat with a group of my friends from work. After a long struggle deciding where to go, we ended up at Buffalo Wild Wings. I’d never been there before and only knew about it from commercials featuring guys eating chicken and watching sports and drinking beer. And when we got there I was immediately overwhelmed by the sportz radiation coming from a zillion televisions plastered all over the place.

Poor Despised Potato

“What was that about potatoes? Were they just a thing from foreign parts, like coffee; a luxury, an extra? Oh, the potato is a lordly fruit; drought or downpour, it grows and grows all the same. It laughs at the weather, and will stand anything; only deal kindly with it, and it yields fifteen-fold again. Not the blood of a grape, but the flesh of a chestnut, to be boiled or roasted, used in every way. A man may lack grain to make bread, but give him potatoes and he will not starve. Roast them in the embers, and there is supper; boil them in water, and there’s a breakfast ready. As for meat, it’s little is needed beside. Potatoes can be served with what you please; a dish of milk, a herring, is enough. The rich eat them with butter; poor folk manage with a tiny pinch of salt… Poor despised potato—a blessed thing!”

On Friday night I called my friend Jaysen to see what he was up to and then ended up driving to Dayton to hang out with some people. I have tons of scholarship essays that I was planning on buckling down and writing over the weekend, so I was just going to head back to Cincinnati Saturday morning and get started rather than spending the weekend at home in Dayton. I can never get anything productive accomplished when I’m at home. Anyway, I’d gotten a late start for the evening, and it was about eleven by the time I made it to Dayton. Since I was already late, I decided to throw punctuality to the wind and stop by the Kava House (a coffee shop) and get some sort of delicious cappuccino smoothie shake drink or something. I figure that since I already had one cup of coffee I might as well go all the way. But when I got off the highway at the mall I notice that smoke was coming out from under the hood of my car.

August 10, 2006

Despite all the chaos and confusion of the weekend, things have been really very dull this week. I stayed in Dayton with my parents until Monday night and then headed back to Cincinnati. I think things are beginning to settle at home. The tree has been removed and the house is covered with blue tarp. Supposedly, insurance guys and structural engineers were supposed to have come by this week and assessed the situation. I haven’t heard the definitive verdict on the house yet.
