Dig-A-Hole-Day

Somebody must have decided that July is Dig-A-Hole-In-The-Road month. Everywhere I go there are hard-hatted men standing in the deep trenches they’ve dug into the streets. And then there are the police officers that just stand there and watch them all day long. Today I was waiting to cross the street on the way to work at UC when an officer said, “Hey, do you want to cross the street.” The obvious answer was “yes, that is why I’m standing at the crosswalk,” but I politely nodded. He said, “Okay, here, I’ll get you across. Just a sec.” We stood there and he looked back and forth down the street for a minute or two until the light changed and the box at the other side of the street signaled that it was safe to cross. “OK!” he said, “Go on across.” “Thanks, sir,” I said and went on my way. It was a nice enough gesture, but would have been about 180 times more helpful had I been blind or something.

Meatloafing

Yesterday was one of the rare days in my life that both Brittany and I had an evening off. She met me in Nothside (the “north side” neighborhood of Cincinnati) where I was browsing CDs at Shake It Records. I came out with an album by Nas and a Curtis Mayfield greatest hits compilation. There was kind of an interesting journey of tangents that led to my purchases. You may not be interested, but I was impressed by the connectedness of my universe at this particular point.

Something’s Fishy

The longstanding tradition of my writing here has been to relate my adventures in eating. Last year in particular I wrote page upon page about trying to make economic and/or healthy foods palatable. I tried pretty valiantly to like tofu, but just couldn’t do it on my own. I actually like most of the tofu dishes that we serve at Jo An though. Anyway, in keeping with my tofu, bread, and fruit experiments of last year I decided to try canned sardines.
